Finish new metro line, Amsterdam told

Thursday 04 June 2009

Amsterdam city council should press ahead and finish building the new Noord-Zuid metro line, a council advisory committee said on Thursday.

Abandoning the project will eventually damage the city's economy and be a waste of money, the committee said.

The committee puts the total cost of the project, which links the north of the city with the Zuidas business park, at €3.1bn. In 2002, when the council gave the project the green light, the cost was put at €1.4bn.

The project has been delayed by a number of technical problems. It should have been completed in 2011 but that date has now been put back to at least 2017, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

What a complete embarrassing mess !!! 15 years to build one tunnel and wreck both the look and economy of a town ....

Complete the north-south line? What a joke. How will cancellation damage the city's economy?

Complete the stations which are in progress and turn them into 'underground Amsterda' complete with shops, entertainment, etc.

Change contractors. The British brought in the Americans (Bechtel) when they were building the Jubilee line in London 10 years ago. In no time at all the delays were resolved.
It's like the Rijksmuesum renovations which will take 10 years. More laziness and bureaucracy

Anyway, The existing AMS metro is a toilet bowl. The locals treat it with disdain so why gift them with more infrastrucutre

What the hell, this is why I pay huge tax? 6 years delay and they want to pay same company more money for delaying, wrongly estimating the costs? It looks like a reward for the construction company

I agree with Michael... change contractors! Even if it cost a bit more. What makes them think that just giving them more money is going to guarantee getting the job done...and done correctly. Definitely not a Dutch contractor.

How do you get rid of these council members who have shown they are idiots. (for example on everything from the Red Light district to the coffee shops) Can't the people of Amsterdam recall these people. I'm surprised the Mayor and the Amsterdam Counsel have not blamed the construction mess on the mob like they do everything else. They are destroying this wonderful and unique city. JUST FOLLOW THE MONEY!...and by the way, did not the people of Amsterdam vote NO for the Noord-Zuid line?

BAD JOB !

Our money has been lost through corruption or laziness or incompetence. Which is it, Mr Burgermeester, and when are you leaving ?

Bectel? They did a bang-up job on Bostons "Big dig" project. Oh don't mind the 4000 kilo ceiling panels crushing you to death. I agree to change the contractors but NOT an American company who made 1/2 their money last year off of 2 wars.

Thanks Paul for bringing up why not to use Bectel for anything. If the truth be known they and their ilk are the ones responsible for the Bush wars. I repeat..FOLLOW THE MONEY!

good grief, the councillors need a simple lesson in finance; beginning with "sunk costs". In this case literally.
