Violence part of police work: court

Wednesday 27 May 2009

Police chiefs are disappointed in an Amsterdam court which said on Tuesday dealing with aggression and violence was part of the job, the Telegraaf reports.

The public prosecution department had asked the court to double the length of sentences handed down to people convicted of aggression against the police.

Police chiefs said the ruling sent out the wrong message to offenders. Seventeen people were appearing in court on Tuesday charged with using violence against civil servants.

The judge said there was a difference between the situation facing police officers and street youth workers, and other officials such as ambulance staff.

This decision will be capitalized by anarchist and neo-nazi/fascist groups who will test it to the maximum.

Normally I am full of sympathy for the police in Holland, who have always been polite and friendly in my experience, but last weekend a friend of my 17 year old son was beaten up by 2 Almere police after he said 'nice bike' to one as he rode past. They ripped out his earrings and held him on the ground while kneeing his back, which gave him some nasty bruising, and tore his new 40 euro shirt. Then they locked him up overnight in the Almere lockup, in a cell with no bed or chair to sleep in. The boy is very friendly and gentle, with Egyptian parents.
The only motivation anyone can think of is that it was some sort of racist attack, since he had just got a haircut that made him look Moroccan.

How to get such an incident investigated in this country, and how to seek compensation? Police like these give the whole force a bad name.

the only compesation he should get is for his shirt etc and any lost earnings and medical bills, stop this americanised compensation culture, also the officers in question must be punished severely
