'Tribunal destroyed mass grave relics'

Thursday 07 May 2009

Officials from the Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal in the Hague have destroyed around 1,000 items taken from mass graves in Srebrenica, news agency ANP reports.

The items, including photographs, personal possessions and articles of clothing were in too poor condition to be kept, chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz is reported as saying during a visit to the Bosnian capital Sarajevo.

He was speaking to relatives of the Srebrenica massacre, in which Bosnian Serbs killed some 8,000 Muslim men and boys who were under the protection of Dutch soldiers.

Details of the items have been kept as evidence, he said.
