Own label products can slash grocery bills

Consumers can save up to 35% on their grocery bills if they buy supermarket own-label products only, according to research by the consumers association Consumentenbond.

And even with top brands, the price difference between supermarkets is great, the association said.
The survey shows the cheapest supermarket in the country is discount chain Nettorama which focuses on the central regions. Super de Boer and MCD are the most expensive, the association says.
Nettorama branded goods are 12% cheaper than Super de Boer and MCD on average while its own-label goods are 24% cheaper.
Price war
On Thursday supermarket chain Jumbo launched a price war by slashing the cost of over 100 branded products. Dirk van den Broek and Nettorama followed suite, according to a report in the Volkskrant.
Albert Heijn said it would wait and see. ‘We do not have to be the cheapest but we do want to keep our middle position in the market,’ a spokesman told the paper.
Last week, ING economists said that discount supermarkets were encroaching on the market share of the traditional players because consumers were becoming more cost-conscious.
