Foreign minister criticises UN on Sri Lanka

The United Nation’s human rights committee decision to praise the Sri Lankan government’s battle with the Tamil Tiger rebels is ‘improper and tactless’, foreign minister Maxime Verhagen is quoted as saying by Nos tv.

The European Union had asked the UN to set up an investigation into possible human rights abuses by both government troops and the Tamil Tigers.
But the human rights council statement failed to include calls by European nations for a probe into abuses during the 26-year civil war, Bloomberg reports. Twelve of the 47-nation council voted against the statement and six abstained.
This makes the council ‘untrustworthy’, Verhagen said in a statement.
Human rights groups have also criticised the UN for ignoring claims of abuse by both army and rebels, the BBC reports.
