Dutch toddler has swine flu

Friday 01 May 2009

Health officials are trying to track down other people who travelled back from Mexico on the same flight as a three-year-old girl who has been diagnosed with swine flu.

The girl contracted the disease during a family visit to Mexico and developed a temperature almost as soon as she returned home on April 27.

People who sat close to the child during the flight will be given the anti-viral drug Tamiflu as a precautionary measure, officials told news agency ANP.

Health minister Ab Klink told reporters on Wednesday the child was making good progress and that the virus had not mutated.

Vaccines

The Volkskrant reports that vaccine producer Solvay in Weesp will begin producing a vaccine against swine flu from June. 'Enough for the entire population', the paper said.

Solvay has a three year contract with the Dutch government which guarantees it preferential treatment.

However, the paper says the health ministry has also held talks with other pharmaceutical firms about the production of an additional 17 million doses.
