Train tickets set to rise sharply in priceTuesday 28 April 2009 Train tickets will become much more expensive next year following railway operator ProRail's decision to increase its charges by 17%, the Volkskrant quotes Dutch Rail (NS) as saying on Tuesday. The NS said the planned increase in fees to use the tracks is 'absurd' and that it plans to complain to the competition authority NMa. This year, NS is paying €175m to use the railway tracks. Next year that will go up by €30m. ProRail also gets some €2bn a year from the treasury. ProRail said the increase was due to the more 'business-like' approach within the railway sector. 'It is a stimulus to users to look critically at which services they want to buy in,' a spokesman said. NS and ProRail are both 100% state-owned companies. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
monopoly at its best... roads become totally crowded..coach intercity lines dont exist..thus ns does whatever they want...TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE By kostas | April 28, 2009 8:24 AM hence more cars on the road!!! By kwabena | April 28, 2009 9:31 AM I use NS every day from Nijmegen to Amsterdam and how they can justify any price increase with the service (or lack of) they currently provide is a mystery to me! By Mackers | April 28, 2009 2:40 PM jeepers! could we all stop complaining for a moment? in my opinion the NS provide a great service for a very very reasonable price. just have a look over the ditch to the UK for how a rail service can be absolute rubbish. By Bernd Reichenberger | April 28, 2009 4:42 PM to mike b...so because in the UK it is not good that means we should not do it better here?? p.s. i lived in the UK for 4 years and you have the alternative of coach line to go between cities at half and 1/3 of the price compared to the train..or even low cost airlines which maybe does not apply to netherlands. By kostas | April 29, 2009 7:40 AM NS and ProRail are both 100% state-owned companies. In other words, it's nothing but a tax increase. How can ya'll stand your tax burden? It's unbelievable! I thought my taxes were bad until I visited NL. OMG! My sales tax is 8.25%, yours is 19%!!! I couldn't hardly believe it. Everything there is twice as expensive as it is here in Texas. How do you afford to live? My house cost $50K. And that's for 5 bedrooms/3 baths, 2,100sqft, on 1 acre. I've looked at housing there. $250K for a tiny, little bitty townhouse with no yard at all! Eeeeek! How can you stand yet another tax increase? You are already burdened to death! Ack! By The Cat Lady | May 4, 2009 4:20 PM Place your comments: |

Would have at first complained to NMa, and then as last resort pushed up the price. Would be interesting how public are their annual statements, to see how margins are maintained by raising prices instead of working on eficiency. And again of course - someone deserves a bonus.
