Postal worker pay cut plan in doubt

The CNV-affiliated postal workers union has rejected a new pay deal for staff at TNT Post which would involve pay cuts of up to 15%, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

Two other main postal workers’ unions, Abvakabo and BVPP, are still in talks with their members.
The pay deal would give delivery staff a three-year job guarantee in return for less pay. Some workers would get a top up depending on their length of service.
CNV spokeswoman Inge Bakker said a large majority of her members had rejected the deal. ‘TNT wants more flexibility from its staff, they have to work an hour longer and all that for less pay,’ she told the paper.
CNV members also have little faith in the job guarantee, she said, pointing out that last week TNT Post board member Ger Jacobs proposed scrapping Monday deliveries from 2011.
The wage cuts are part of TNT’s strategic plan to cut costs. The company is facing increasing competition from email and other delivery firms which pay their staff as freelancers. The entire Dutch postal market has been open to competition since April 1.
