Newspaper group Wegener earnings fall

Newspaper group Wegener, which owns regional papers De Gelderlander and BN/De Stem, made net profit of €11m last year, compared with €32m in 2007.

Turnover rose 2.2% to €693m.
Wegener said earnings had been pressured by a reorganisation, aimed at reducing costs. The company has reduced its workforce by 300. But the downturn in advertising, particularly personnel adverts, has hit its paid-for papers, the company said.
Last week, Wegener agreed to sell its 37% stake in the AD media group to PCM.
Wegener is 85% owned by British newspaper company Mecom.
