Hospital furious at child heart death leak

Officials at Radboud University’s teaching hospital are considering taking legal action after figures were leaked showing the death rate at its child heart surgery unit is higher than normal, news agency ANP reports on Monday.

The hospital admits that the death rate is higher than expected but says no conclusions can be attached to the figures.
The figures come from a European surgery database but that database is far from complete, teaching hospital chairman Emile Lohman told ANP.
The hospital says the death rate may be higher than at other hospitals because it carries out more risky operations on very premature babies.
ANP says the adult heart surgery centre at the hospital was also closed for a time in 2006 because of concerns about the death rate.
