Deal reached on old car destruction grant
Friday 03 April 2009
The owners of cars and vans which run on diesel and were built before 1990 can claim a grant of €750 if they have their vehicles destroyed, the government announced on Friday.
The owners of cars built before 2000 can claim a €1,000 euro bonus.
The bonus scheme is one of the measures announced by the government last week to stimulate the economy. The government hopes the bonus will lead to 100,000 old, polluting vehicles being replaced by newer, cleaner vehicles.
The government is putting €65m into the scheme, the car sector €20m.
In order to qualify, cars must be roadworthy. 'This is about cars which are being used, not wrecks,' an environment ministry spokesman said.
