Civil servants over-paid when seconded out

Thursday 09 April 2009

Some 40% of the 184 civil servants seconded by the government to work at international organisations over the past 6.5 years wrongly received pension payments and 25% got extra expenses, the auditors office said in an official report on Thursday.

The audit office was asked to look at extra pay-outs for seconded staff following the scandal over the €190,000 housing subsidy paid to former aid minister Eveline Herfkens when she worked at the United Nations. That payment broke UN rules.

The report focuses on on civil servants who were paid directly by the organisation they were seconded to. In total, wrongful pension payments cost the treasury €2.5m.

In addition, 41 officials were given extra payments totaling €500,000 which broke the rules, the audit office said.
