Amsterdam to halve borough councils

Amsterdam city council is to reduce the number of borough councils from 14 to seven in an effort to improve the functioning of local government.

The new structure will come into effect in May 2010. The local government reorganisation will mean a reduction in the number of councillors from 322 to 199 and in executives from 49 to 35.
Amsterdam introduced borough councils at the beginning of the 1980s. It is not yet clear which boroughs will merge.
