Toys 'R' Us pulls out of Holland

Monday 02 March 2009

The US toy chain Toys 'R' Us is pulling out of the Netherlands, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Monday.

The company has been active here since 1983 and declined to give a reason for the pull-out. Dutch firm Speelhoorn, which runs the 17 stores for the Americans, will continue to operate the shops under the name Toys XL.

The Dutch toy chain Blokker has a minority stake in Speelhoorn. Toys 'R' Us tried to sell its Dutch operations to Blokker in 1997 but was refused permission because of competition concerns. Blokker owns the Bart Smit and Intertoys toy shop chains.
