Top justice official guilty of corruption

The advocate general of Arnhem has been sentenced to a suspended jail term of six months and 200 hours community service for corruption, news agency ANP reports on Tuesday.

Jan Koers was found guilty of accepting bribes, falsifying statements and defrauding an insurance company.
The prosecution department claimed that Koers had been bought off by a local businessman who wanted his help in recovering 200,000 guilders lost on a fraudulent oil transaction in 1999. Van L offered Koers 25% if he got the cash back.
According to a psychiatric report quoted by the Volkskrant, Koers is suffering from an anxiety syndrome which means he is not entirely responsible for his actions.
Nevertheless, the fraud had ‘severely damaged the integrity’ of his office, the judges said.
Van L was given a suspended jail term of three months and 100 hours community service for bribery.
