Wilders diplomatic row rumbles on

Friday 13 February 2009

The Netherlands does not want the diplomatic conflict with Britain over its ban on anti-Islam campaigner and MP Geert Wilders to escalate, Trouw reports on Friday.

The paper quotes a well-informed MP in The Hague who says the British government is extremely irritated by Dutch attempts to interfere in its right to ban undesirables.

And it quotes Dutch foreign minister Maxime Verhagen as saying that 'more pressure [on the British] would not have led to the desired result'. The Netherlands will support Wilders if he decides to appeal agains the ban, Verhagen said.

Opposition right-wing Liberal (VVD) MPs have called for Verhagen to summon the British ambassador for a dressing down.

Deported
Wilders was deported from Britain on Thursday evening after attempting to attend a screening of his 15-minute anti-Islam film Fitna.

Earlier, while being held at Heathrow airport, Wilders said he had been treated disgracefully. '[British prime minister] Gordon Brown is the biggest coward in Europe,' the Telegraaf reported Wilders as saying. 'This is a very black day. They are bowing down to Islam by refusing entry to critics.'

On Monday it emerged that Britain had banned Wilders from the country because his presence could lead to public disorder and because of his extremist views.

Fitna

Wilders wants an end to Muslim immigration into the Netherlands and has called for the Koran, which he likens to Mein Kampf, to be banned.

Last month an Amsterdam court ruled that Wilders should be prosecuted for inciting hatred.

The screening went ahead on Thursday. The Volkskrant said it was attended by around 25 people, of whom only four were members of parliament. In total, the British parliament has 1,489 members.

The Volkskrant also pointed out than none of the three main political parties in Britain has commented on the row.

Yesterday the Volkskrant reported that Dutch anti-racist organisation Nederland Bekent Kleur has accused Wilders of hypocrisy because he recently tried to have a Muslim religious leader banned from the Netherlands.

Dear Madam,
Persons representing a nation overseas or persons sent to another country to represent a spiritual leader or a Head of State are termed diplomats.
When a certain 'diplomat' is declared by a host country as an 'undesirable', that person is declared 'persona non grata'.
This is the kernel of a "diplomatic conflict", as reported in your article.
However, notwithstanding all attempts by Mr Wilders to claim that he is on official business representing either the people or the parliament: he is not.
Therefore, there is no diplomatic conflict at play here. There is simply one citizen, who for whatever reasons, has a train of reporters that follow him in the hope of scooping the latest "crazy statement" from this person.

As outlined in Minister Jacqui Smith's (Home Office) letter, it is 'public policy' to refuse entry to the United Kingdom who are fundamentalists and whose actions stir up ethnic hatred and incite violence.
Public Policy in the UK is to refuse all such individuals into its sovereign territory. MR Wilders laughs at this "slappe briefje", but he does not realise that -- just as with the paperwork issued to return undesirable immigrants & travellers to, for instance, Somalia -- this 'slappe briefje' is all that minister Jacqui Smith is required to issue this individual.
Wilders is not welcome in the UK, and he can better start with his individual appeals procedure rather than pester and hamper his own parliamentary house at a time where the economy is in freefall and people’s jobs are under threat .... oh, but of course, Geerte is on the parliamentary gravy train so he has nothing to worry about impending recession.
Aan de andere kant, als dat erger wordt van recessie tot depressie... dan misschen heeft deze Wilders wat ervaring daarin? Lijkt mij dat hij al lang met zijn eigen individueel “depression” worstelt.

by not allowing this man in to the country i see this as a grate miscarriage of justice where freedom of speech is not free
considering the amount of Islamic extremists that have preached in the UK

i don't have a problems with having an anti Islam extremist doing a bit of preaching

away from my opinion i don't think the people of the UK care either way considering that there was only 25 people at his screening even with all the publicity created with his refusal to the UK

above all i believe in freedom of choice information and speech

It is about time someone took
Wilders down a peg or two. I entirely agree with McCullagh-Winters,
and could not have put it better.

Mr. Wilders doesn't meet high enough standards to entry the UK.

Political cowboys regardless of their creed ,even if MP's ,should be stopped at any price ,even at the cost of a diplomtic row ,the EU fought the late Haider to smash him in his trucks ,the
same should be with Wilders ,perhaps the UK's action is just the start of his decline hopefully into oblivion.

Wilders should be ignored. He is a populist, unconsciously aiming at personal greatness, who thinks of himself as some sort of messias, saving poor Holland from the ISLAM TERROR!!! He is not. He should keep his gob closed and tend to important business, like the economics. He has nothing to say about that subject, apparently..

Britain refused entry for Wilders "because his presence could lead to public disorder."

Who would cause this disorder? What would they do? Would they riot in the streets? Would angry mobs call for Wilders to be murdered?

If so, who are the "extremists" in this situation?

Also, it seems hypocritical that the Dutch government criticizes Britain for this, while the Dutch simultaneously seek to prosecute Wilders for his words. If they believe that his words constitute crimes, then they should not be surprised that other nations would deny him entry, especially when he makes open plans to repeat this "crime."

As with all people, Wilders should be afforded his full rights to freedom of thought and of expression.

If Wilders views are offensive, the solution is not to silence him, but instead to oppose his views by offering forth better, more reasonable views; by showing rationally, with evidence, how and why his views are incorrect; by supporting better education and understanding.

We should never seek to build a society where any of its members are afraid to speak out.

As uncomfortable as it sometimes may be, the bottom line remains: if you are not in favor of freedom of speech for ideas that you find repugnant, then you are not in favor of freedom of speech.
