Finance minister talks bonuses with banks

Thursday 12 February 2009

Finance minister Wouter Bos plans to meet bank chiefs to discuss moderating financial sector bonuses, news agency ANP reports on Thursday.

The meeting follows a demand by a majority of MPs for action on banking bonuses in the light of the economic downturn.

Bos said he wanted banks to be aware that the 'fragile support' they still have in society 'demands great moderation in giving bonuses', ANP reports. 'Put crudely, the financial sector has made a complete mess of it,' Bos said.

Financial institutions which are not in trouble and have not benefited from government bail-outs should not feel under attack, ANP quoted Bos as saying.

The government has already nationalised Fortis and ABN Amro Nederland and given cash to ING, Aegon and SNS Reaal from a €20bn support fund.
