Dutch terror suspect avoids trial
Thursday 26 February 2009
Dutch terrorism suspect Wesam al-Delaema is to make a statement on Thursday before the Washington federal court admitting his involvement in terrorism, the NRC reports.
The deal with the American justice department, which was confirmed by his Dutch lawyer Victor Koppe, means Al-Delaema will not have to stand trial and will receive a reduced sentence.
The Iraqi-born Dutch national is the first terrorist suspected of planting roadside bombs in Iraq to be tried in the United States.
Al-Delaema was extradited to the United States in 2007 after he was identified on footage digging in roadside bombs. He will serve his sentence in a Dutch jail.
