Dutch Rail profits down, passengers up
Friday 13 February 2009
Profits at state-owned Dutch Rail (NS) fell to €281m last year from €337m in 2007 although the number of passengers went up by just over 4% in the same period.
The drop in profit is the result of higher personnel costs, said Dutch Rail.
Last year’s increase in passengers is below the government’s annual growth target of 5%, says the Telegraaf.
Dutch Rail is gloomy about 2009’s results. It expects passenger numbers to fall because of the economic climate and lower returns from station restaurants.

Now if America would look how European rail can make money rather than the horror story called AMTRAK. Rails sit empty as highways are clogged with commuters and trucks. From Boston to New York City there is no direct commercial rail but there are tracks for AMTRAK. After America built their "autobahn" they dismantled their rail systems. Now they sit in traffic on top or next to unused rail tracks. But they would rather sit in their 4000kilo SUV wasting gas rather than siting back and enjoying the ride.
