Solar energy is the future, says prince

Tuesday 20 January 2009

The sun and the deserts present the world with a major opportunity to solve global energy problems, crown prince Willem-Alexander said on Monday during a keynote speech at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi.

'If it were up to the sun, we would have no energy problems at all,' the prince said. 'Every 30 minutes the earth absorbs enough light to meet the world's energy needs for a year.'

For example, large scale solar plants could be built in the deserts and would provide a fundamental solution to energy supplies after 2050, the prince said.

'The point is, if we do not approach energy as a long term investment, we will end up paying much higher bills,' he told his audience.

As a young man I put little mirrors inside an discarded parabolic antenna. The sun shone back at the receiver point in a concentration that boiled a liter water in 5 minutes. These contraptions bigger and perfected can melt sand into glass to pour building blocks in molds. It can also super heat water for a steam turbine charging electric mega batteries. Electric motors will run the show. The desert can be cheaply covered with a glass roof to keep moisture in and grow food. The hardly changed 100 year old combustion engine has had its time.

Just as well the Dutch Government woke-up and revised their attitude, and the Rules on Solar Energy Grant scheme last year then!
