Rotterdam rail death ‘a tragic accident’

The death of a 19-year-old man who was hit by an intercity train early on New Year’s Day was ‘a tragic accident’, police said on Friday.

After interviewing eyewitnesses, police said earlier reports that the dead man and a 21-year-old friend were chased on to the track at the Rotterdam Alexander station were false.
Instead, around 10 youths had gathered on the track after a dispute at a nearby disco. The two who were hit did not clear the tracks on time as the intercity train arrived at the station.
Meanwhile, a 37-year-old woman is in a coma in intensive care after being beaten up in Wassenaar. The incident took place around 2am during a party at Duindigt race trac, police said. They are appealing for witnesses.
And a 21-year-old man who was kicked and stabbed in the chest after being set upon by a gang in Spijkenisse is now out of danger, NOS tv reports.
