'Mosquito' given go ahead

Thursday 29 January 2009

Home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst is to allow local councils to decide for themselves if they want to make use of the Mosquito, a machine which emits an annoying sound only young people can hear.

The machine is used by 105 local authorities to discourage youngsters from hanging around on street corners.

In November, Ter Horst said use of the mosquito may be against the constitution and may have to be phased out.

Ter Horst does however have reservations. 'Its use means no effort is made to make contact with loitering youngsters,' she told the Volkskrant.

I'm getting annoyed with this belief that only young people can hear this sound. I'm 28 and can hear it. My mother is in her 50s and can hear it. It's not just annoying, but can also be painful!

I also agree that it would be better to make contact with young people rather than scooting them away with irritating noises. Stop being scared of kids. Adults need to take control and handle it like...well, like adults!

These devices are horrific. Would they use them if all adults could hear them - a constant screeching sound all night, every night? These things in England kept my son awake all night and his sleep pattern - and therefore schoolwork - suffered terribly. As no adult could hear it, people didnt know the local shop kept theirs running 24/7 - nor did they care).

Youngsters the world over 'hang around' - it's called socialising. This isn't the first generation to do it, and it won't be the last. Mosquito devices don't discriminate between those teenagers who cause trouble and those who just want to spend time together - it punishes all.

Another waste of funds to a non-functional project. Use the money for better projects and make parent accountable for their children. Perhaps make parents do jail time for their child's crime... Then they might take more care in their family or not have children they do not want. Over population is the underlying cause and no one wants to talk about it. 1+1=2. Fortunate for us we can now use science and NOT the bible, to see if embryos have defects BEFORE they are born. Thus eliminating some of the future problem from happening. Drunk and "horny" is not an excuse for to produce child, wear a condom or get an abortion!

I agree with JR. I am in my 50's and I remember the same high-pitched sound in department stores from when I was a child. My mother explained that often children and women can hear high-pitched sounds, but that it was not as common for men to hear those frequencies.

The "mosquito" will prevent bands of little old ladies as well as kidsfrom congregating on street corners.
