Paul Verhoeven's World War II film Zwartboek (2006) has been voted the best Dutch film of all time in a Dutch film festival poll.
Eddy Terstall's modern drama Simon (2004) was second.
Verhoeven's Soldaat van Oranje (1977) and Turks Fruit (1973), which both starred Rutger Hauer were in third and fifth place.

Paul Verhoeven was very succesful in the United States with several movies. I must say, I was surprised he went back to The Netherlands after that. What's this obsession Dutch filmmakers have with WWII? Paul Verhoeven is not even old enough to remember that war!
The fact that Dutch people voted his film Best Dutch Film of All Time proves my point. Maybe they should move on. Unfortunately there are still many other wars going on at this moment
