Public transport card way over budget

The introduction of a smart card for public transport, the OV-chipkaart, has cost €100m more in the period from 2006 than the €249m originally budgeted for, according to a confidential government report obtained by the Volkskrant.

The card was supposed to be introduced nationwide in January 2009 but the launch has been postponed because of concerns about fraud and privacy.
