Province chairman in conflict of interest row

The queen’s commissioner in Zuid-Holland, Jan Franssen, is at the centre of a political row after magazine Revu revealed a company he works for has won a €7m contract from the provincial council he chairs.

Franssen is a member of the supervisory board of the Van Gelder group, which won a controversial contract to prepare ground for a new coal-fired power station in Rotterdam port.
Franssen has 23 other jobs as well as his crown-appointed position, the paper says.
Bart Vermeulen, a Socialist member of the provincial council, called on Franssen to stop doing all other jobs which involved a salary.
‘The law states very clearly that jobs on the side can only be tolerated if a conflict of interest can be avoided,’ he told Revu.
