More money pledged for the arts

Culture minister Ronald Plasterk suggested on Sunday that there will be more money in the budget for arts than had been expected.

He was speaking at a meeting of cultural umbrella organisation Kunsten ’92, which had been actively campaigning for a bigger slice of the budget in Amsterdam at the weekend.
The minister said he had spent the summer ‘lying under a tree thinking’, according to Monday’s Parool: not just about what parliament wanted, but also about what people from the sector and the arts council had told him.
‘I can’t make everyone happy,’ the paper quotes him as saying, ‘but I can make a strong cultural life possible.’ He would not say how much extra money there will be.
The government presents its budget on September 16.
