Uruzgan army unit suspended from duty

Friday 26 September 2008

A unit of 24 Dutch soldiers serving in Afghanistan has been temporarily suspended from duty following a dispute with their commander, reports the GPD news agency on Friday.

The commander has instigated an investigation into the incident after the soldiers in one of the two reconnaissance units of the Task Force Uruzgan, unanimously refused to carry out an order, says the GPD.

It is unclear whether the soldiers will be sent back to the Netherlands and if they will have to face a military court, the agency says.

A defence ministry spokesman has confirmed the incident took place but declined to give details.
