Mussel sales plummet after toxin scare

The sale of Dutch mussels in Belgium has more than halved after news last week that some Belgian mussels contain toxin, report various media on Tuesday.

On Friday it was revealed that the ‘Belgica’ mussel retains the toxin DSP which can cause gastric and intestinal diseases.
Belgian consumers have since been reluctant to buy mussels although mussels from the southern Dutch province of Zeeland are toxin-free, says ANP.
The website of the organisation representing the interests of the Dutch fishing industry states that local mussels are subject to strict inspections on a weekly basis.
