Top health service managers should not earn more than the prime minister, not the €220,000 limit that they themselves recommend, according to a majority of MPs.

On Tuesday, senior health service staff published a code of conduct which would allow top managers in highly-competitive sectors to earn up to €34,000 more than the prime minister.
The cabinet’s official policy is that no one working in the public sector should earn more than the prime minister’s basic salary of €186,000. MPs from across the political spectrum agree with that limit, news agency ANP reports. The managers’ own plans will be debated in parliament in early September.
There have been a number of instances recently of health service bosses earning over €300,000 and being paid large golden handshakes on leaving.
