Pensioner caught growing marijuana

Monday 28 July 2008

A 73-year-old man in The Hague was surprised to be told by police last week that the begonias he had been tending in the flower beds by his front door concealed marijuana plants, reports news agency Reuters.

'Police officers suddenly noticed marijuana plants sprouting from his begonias,' a police spokeswoman in The Hague told Reuters.

The pensioner promised to destroy the marijuana plants, which he believes were planted by local youngsters, says Reuters.

Earlier this month the Dutch government set up a task force to crack down on marijuana cultivation. Growing marijuana is illegal in the Netherlands, but a blind eye is turned to its sale in so-called coffee shops.

"Growing marijuana is illegal in the Netherlands"

I think this is correct ... and also not right.

It is 'allowed' to grow 3 plants per person, but a maximum of 5 plants per household, in Holland (after informing the Police and being 'allowed').

Commercial growing, for supply, even to coffeeshops (who can legally sell and pay tax on it but not legally purchase it - !!!), is not 'allowed' and is Illegal in Holland.

This is like making Coke illegal but allowing people to buy it in the Albert Heijn and drink it on the street. You can't have it both ways... unless you're in Holland.

My advice for those treated as crimials for their involvement in cannabis related businesses is plead not guilty and read Hank Rearden's speech to the court from Atlas Shrugged in your defense.

The day has passed when twelve individuals could be counted on to cage a fellow citizen to be routinely raped and abused for decades for growing, trading, or consuming the most useful plant known to man.
