No gay relationships at Protestant schoolsTuesday 01 July 2008 The Netherlands’ 165 staunchly Protestant schools are standing firm on sacking homosexual teachers who are in a relationship with another man or woman, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday. The schools made their standpoint clear in a paper on homosexuality which was presented to education minister Ronald Plasterk on Monday. Plasterk said the law does allow education on the basis of religious convictions but said he was still in talks with schools about what to do if a gay teacher married. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
No Sarah, it blows the "tolerant" and "compassionate" religious claptrap outta the water. Dutch society IS tolerant, religion is NOT. And never will be, as their rules are as indecent and groundless as a dictatorship. See what they used to say about women just 100 years ago... By Wordstar | July 1, 2008 7:39 PM Hell, I also thought Holland was a liberal country. How can they allow bigoted schools and school administrators to do this? I think it's going to come to the point - if it hasn't already - where only the laws of the land can be counted on to trump the actions of bigots in these so-called religions, and the law will be the last beacon of light when it comes to civil rights. Even conservative judges are realizing that in the United States...that's how the California Supreme court paved the way for gay marriages. Be it in interpretation or in just plain needing a rewrite, it's time to admit that the bible is an outmoded book that possibly has outlived it's usefulness in it's present form. By Edward | July 3, 2008 5:16 AM I find it fascinating that the people who have commented on this article all want to talk about tolerance. Tolerance includes tolerating people of different beliefs than yours. That is why tolerance is a double-edged sword. I'm not hearing a lot of tolerance in the responses to this article. I don't hear the Christians tolerating homosexuals, and I don't hear anyone tolerating the Christians. By Tim Lee | July 3, 2008 9:01 AM Sounds like a lot of intolerance. If a group of people establish a school based on certain biblical beliefs then surely they are entitled to hire as teachers people who agree with those core beliefs. You wouldn't demand that they hire a creationist to teach the theory of evolution? So if their bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin why demand that they hire someone who chooses to ignore that belief? It makes any claim of freedom of religion to be bunkum.
