The arrest of former Serbian leader Radovan Karadzic is a step in the right direction but does not mean that Serbia can now sign a treaty paving its way for admission to the EU, foreign minister Maxime Verhagen told NOS tv.

Before that can happen, former army leader Radko Mladic and Goran Hadzic must be handed over to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Verhagen was reported as saying.
Serbia must also set up a programme to protect witnesses who give evidence at the Yugoslavia tribunal, Verhagen said.
Mladic was the Bosnian Serb general in charge of the troops who over-ran the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica and massacred thousands of men and boys. The enclave was under Dutch protection.
In April, the Netherlands agreed to sign the EU Stabilisation and Association Agreement on the condition it does not come into effect until Belgrade cooperates fully with the tribunal. That means that ‘Mladic is on the plane’, Verhagen was reported as saying at the time.
