Five charity workers raped in Kenya

Monday 28 July 2008

Five young Dutch women between the ages of 17 and 25 were raped by a group of Kenyan men last Thursday during a working holiday organised by the Amersfoort based charity Livingstone.

A spokeswoman for Livingstone on Monday confirmed the report which was published in the Reformatorisch Dagblad newspaper, reports ANP news service.

The attacks took place while a group of 12 Dutch volunteers were working on rebuilding a school. Despite security measures, around 10 men forced their way onto the terrain using a neighbour as hostage, reports ANP.

The intruders, who were armed with a gun and other weapons, demanded all those present, including local people and children, to surrender their valuables. Five of the Dutch women were taken to another room where they were raped.

‘They also tried to rape a number of local women but they were eventually left alone because they had babies with them,’ the spokeswoman for Livingstone told ANP.

Staff at the organisation are ‘extremely shocked’ by the attacks and have immediately suspended the Kenyan project, she said.

The five Dutch women were treated at a hospital in Nairobi before being flown to Brussels on Saturday where they were met by family and Livingstone staff. They will be offered further medical care in the Netherlands.

Kenyan police have assigned 30 officers to the case and have already questioned a hundred people, says ANP.

This is really sad and unfortunate because as A Kenyan who lived in the Netherlands and was treated exceptionally well by the dutch- my own people have been unable to reverse the kindness. It is our hope that the Kenyan police will deal ruthlessly with the criminals.

This is really shame..First these women go to such places for help and then they met with this fate. It will be hard for any organization in future to restore the faith in the participants and guess who will lose???

Disgusting. My heart goes out to those poor women. I hope they are able to heal, both physically and psychologically.

I wonder what security precautions Livingstone took. I hope they and other charitable organizations consider real-world dangers when making those arrangements and not rely on the goodwill of others when engaging in their idealistic efforts. If they can't guarantee the safety of their volunteers, they should not be arranging such working-holiday projects.

This type of crime deserves a barbaric punishment, like castration, slowly and painfully!

This is shameless of the Kenyan people and I hope that the Kenyan police will get hold of them and make sure justice is done. Stiupid senseless beasts.

I am married to a Dutchman and the Netherlands people I have met are really nice, loving people who are ready to help the disadvantaged but this is an evil way to reciprocate.

Too bad this didn't take place in Texas. If it did, then those mother****ers would be put on the death penalty without a doubt.

Those jerks should either be put in jail for life or be put on the death row.

It's a big shame for the whole country of Kenya. We are very sorry to hear such a disgrace of what happened to those young volunteers. Let us hope that those rapists are caught and brought to justice.

Rape is normal in Afrika, in South Africa a woman has a higher chance to get raped in her life than to learn to read. (despite general schooling). Inform and arm yourself before you go to such places.
