Kant tipped as new Socialist leader
Wednesday 18 June 2008
Speculation is mounting about who will replace Jan Marijnissen as leader of the parliamentary Socialist Party following his surprise decision on Tuesday to stand down.
Agnes Kant and Jan de Wit, both long-term MPs, are being tipped for the job. Foreign affairs spokesman MP Harry van Bommel has already said he is not interested.
Kant, number two on the party list at the last election and seen by many as the logical choice, said she would take time to consider her options.
Marijnissen is leaving the job after 14 years because of health problems. He will remain an MP and chairman of the party.
Candidates for the leadership job have until Thursday lunch time to declare themselves. The 25 Socialist MPs will vote on Friday.
