Health costs set to soar

Wednesday 25 June 2008

Millions of people face an enomous rise in healthcare costs next year because the cabinet wants to stop allowing the cost of dental braces, glasses and speech lessons to be deducted from tax, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

Calculations by the FNV trade union federation show the average family will have to pay hundreds more euros a year because the standard provisions are being reduced, the paper says.

MPs are due to debate the changes next week.

At the moment, households can deduct medical expenses over a certain limit from tax. Families earning less than €30,000 a year can offset health spending over €495 a year from their tax bill, the paper says.
