Crèche costs to rise for all parents

Friday 20 June 2008

The cost of a place in a crèche is to be increased and subsidies for informal childminders slashed, under cabinet plans to bring spending on childcare under control, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.

Labour ministers had wanted to increase crèche fees only for people earning 1.5 times the average income, but the Christian Democrats argued for an across-the-board increase, the paper says.

Sources close to the cabinet told the paper the rise could be up to 20%, but it is still being debated.

The much-contested childminder subsidy scheme – under which grandparents can get paid for taking care of their grandchildren – will continue, due to pressure from ChristenUnie ministers. But the payment will be slashed from €6 to €2.50 per hour, with a maximum of 10 or 12 hours a week, the paper says.

In addition, the cabinet is to introduce a new form of childcare – the home crèche – which will have less strict rules than formal crèches and which can charge €4 per hour.

A formal decision is expected at today’s cabinet meeting.

This has implications for all working parents in the NL

By Linda | June 20, 2008 11:20 AM

This is one of the most backwards policies of the Dutch government. They claim that they want more women in the work force (in higher positions no less) but these cabinet plans make it very difficult for those women who want to work full time (and therefore get promoted to higher positions) while sending their child to affordable daycare to advance professionally. Unbelievable!
