Postal delivery workers to strike over pay

Postal delivery workers will begin a series of revolving strikes next week in support of their pay claim.

The Hague will be the first to be hit, with no deliveries or collections planned for next Wednesday. Amsterdam will follow two days later. A national strike is planned for May 27.

Talks between the postal unions and TNT management have been going on for more than a year. The unions want a 3.5% rise this year. The company has offered 1.5% this year and the same in 2009.

TNT also wants to reach a deal on its plans to reduce secondary benefits for staff. It says the move is necessary to keep the company competitive.

The 1.5% rise offered for next year ‘ is conditional on the elaboration and implementation of a plan … to make fundamental changes to the conditions of employment,’ TNT said in a statement.

The unions had set a deadline of Wednesday night for the company to come up with a better offer.
