Wintry weather causes record traffic jams

The wintry weather caused serious problems for commuters and air travellers on Tuesday with jams of up to 30 km in the morning rush hour.

And motoring organisations warned that the evening rush hour could also be chaotic as snow showers continue across the country.
By 8.30 am there were 120 traffic jams with a total length of 888 km, making it the second worst-day on record, according to motoring organisation ANWB. The previous record was a 975 km jam in 1999.
According to the Telegraaf, over 1,000 lorries and cars were so badly damaged in accidents that they had to be abandoned. In particular, the roads round Rotterdam were busy.
Some flights to and from Schiphol airport were delayed because of the snow, the airport authorities said. On the roads there have been dozens of accidents in the slippery conditions. Train travel from Rotterdam station was also disrupted for a time in the morning because of the snow.
The weather is set to remain unchanged for the rest of today and into Wednesday, the KNMI weather bureau said.
