Police reject pay deal, threaten action

Thursday 06 March 2008

The main police unions have begun preparing for a new round of industrial action after rejecting a final government pay offer.

On Wednesday, the NPB union said more than 90% of its members voted against the deal, worth an increase of around 10% over three years. Two other unions earlier rejected the package.

The unions have given home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst until midnight Friday to come up with more cash or face further strikes.

The current deal was worked out three weeks ago under the auspices of an independent mediator who said it was the ‘best compromise imaginable’.

The impasse around police pay began last year.
