Over 100,000 trees felled
Monday 31 March 2008
Over 100,000 trees have been felled in the last two months or are about to be chopped down, according to the new hot-line set up by the radio show Vroege Vogels (Early Birds) and the tree foundation.
The number is much higher than expected as is the number of calls (1,100) received.
Around 10% of ancient trees have been cut down in the last decade, many of them unnecessarily, says the tree foundation. This means fewer trees are reaching the ripe old age of 100.

Many tree species are considered "mature" when reaching their hundreth birthday ( beeches and oaks for example), but at that age they are absolutely not "old" ! 500 years old oaks are not rare and what about yew trees that were planted in Solomon's time?
