New flight tax court ruling today
Wednesday 19 March 2008
The government will hear today whether it can go ahead with the introduction of a new eco tax on air travel.
The Hague court is due to rule whether the tax - €11.25 on flights of up to 2,500 km and €45 on longer flights – is legal. The tax does not apply to transfer passengers who account for some 40% of aircraft movements at Schiphol airport.
The tax will add €180 to the price of a holiday in the Canary Islands for a family of four. Opponents argue it breaks EU and international treaties.
