MPs want Herfkens to repay rent money
Thursday 27 March 2008
MPs from all parties said on Thursday that UN diplomat Evelien Herfkens should repay the $250,000 she was wrongly given to help pay for the rent on her New York home.
The subsidy broke UN rules. Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen and aid minister Bert Koenders also want the money paid back but say it will be legally difficult.
The case would depend on whether Herfkens knew she was breaking UN guidelines, which she denies, and whether she or foreign ministry officials suggested the extra payment, Verhagen told MPs.
