Holiday resorts may avoid new plane tax

Junior tax minister Jan Kees de Jager is considering changing the new eco-tax on air travel to popular holiday destinations such as Turkey and the Canary Islands.
Under new rules, flights of over 2,500 km will be subject to an extra €45 levy from July 1. Shorter flights face a surcahrge of €11.25.
De Jager told NOS tv on Wednesday that the difference between the rates was too great and that he is looking at the possibility of introducing a middle tariff.
Earlier the minister told MPs that the tax, which is supposed to raise €350m for the treasury, will not lead to job losses. He was responding to claims by Amsterdam's Schiphol aiport that some 12,000 jobs will go as a result of the new tax.
