Sharp rise in integrity checks

Thursday 31 January 2008

The number of requests for personal background checks made by local authorities reached 263 last year, compared with 158 in 2006, the Bibob bureau said on Thursday.

The checks allow councils to decide if company owners who have apply for operational licences have criminal connections.

Most requests were made by Amsterdam, followed by Maastricht and Rotterdam. Opponents of the Bibob checks say the reports are often unsubstantiated and anonymous.
