Crackdown on internet gambling

Banks and credit card companies are to be held criminally liable if they facilitate Dutch citizens in gambling on foreign internet sites under new justice ministry regulations, reports Wednesday’s Volkskrant.

A list of banned websites is to be circulated this spring, the paper says.
Internet gambling is illegal in the Netherlands but according to the state-owned monopoly holder Holland Casino, some 400,000 people gamble online. The justice ministry says some 30 foreign firms are targeting Dutch users.
Dutch gambling rules are under pressure from the EU which is investigating whether they are a form of protectionism and contravene single market rules.
