Rita Verdonk is politician of the year

Controversial right-wing politician and former immigration minister Rita Verdonk has been voted the best politician of the year in a poll of 24,000 people by the TV current affairs show EénVandaag.

Geert Wilders leader of the anti-immigration PVV party was number two and Christian Democrat prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende was in third place.

Some 18% voted for Verdonk who has been an independent MP since being thrown out of the liberal VVD party.
