Community service for letting off fireworks illegally

Monday 31 December 2007

Police in the Amsterdam region have sentenced 162 young people to community service, including compulsory lessons on the dangers of fireworks, over the last few days for letting off fireworks, reports ANP news service.

It is illegal to let off fireworks in the Netherlands before 10am on New Year’s Eve and after 2am on New Year’s Day.

A spokeswoman for Amsterdam police told ANP on Monday that they had received around 200 reports of fireworks being let off illegally, mainly by young people. Adults who were found letting off fireworks illegally have been fined, she said.

Police forces in several other regions have also been busy with firework-related incidents, said ANP.
