Food logos need government supervision
Tuesday 20 November 2007
The government should supervise the growing number of logos and hallmarks that adorn food packaging, says the Consumentenplatform, an advisory group for the ministry of agriculture.
The advice is based on research from Schuttelaar & Partners. Of the 506 people questioned, 17% said they never read this labelling and the rest just want information on shelf life, price, ingredients and nutritional value. Half of respondents say labels do not give enough information.
The advisory group also wants a distinction made between information such as shelf life and commercial comments such as 'pure' or 'fresh'.
The EU is currently discussing new standards for labelling. A policy is expected at the end of 2007.
