Anne Frank’s tree cut down

The horse chestnut tree which Anne Frank wrote about in her famous diary during World War Two is being chopped down on Wednesday, despite earlier being given a reprieve.

Amsterdam city centre district council says the tree, which is infested with honey fungus, is a real danger to its surroundings.
Only 28% of the 27-ton tree’s trunk is still healthy, the council says. A graft from the original tree is to be planted in its place.
