Air travel tax will mean fewer passengers

The new tax on air travel that the cabinet plans to introduce next year will lead to a 11% to 13% reduction in passengers, according to a report sent to parliament by junior finance minister Jan Kees de Jager.

The cabinet is to put an extra charge of €11.25 on short-haul and €45 on long-haul flights.

According to a report by the government’s research body CPB, the tax on plane tickets will lead to the loss of between 5,000 and 10,000 jobs in and around Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, reports the Financieele Dagblad.

The association of European airlines has made an official protest about the tax plans, saying it will 'contribute absolutely nothing' to making flying more environment-friendly.
